Vinyl plank (LVP) installation
More moisture-tolerant than laminate, at a similar price in water-resistant grades.

A laminate job usually includes checking the slab or subfloor, laying an underlayment (often with a built-in vapor barrier over concrete), and clicking the planks together in a floating layout with trim and transitions at the edges. Laminate is not glued or nailed down in most homes.
Laminate comes in grades by thickness: basic (6–7mm), midrange (8–10mm), high-end (12mm or more) and water-resistant (8–12mm) grades built to handle occasional moisture better than standard laminate.

Laminate's core is compressed wood fiber, so it can swell if it gets and stays wet. FEMA's Technical Bulletin 2 rates laminate flooring as unacceptable for flood damage resistance, the same rating as solid and engineered wood. That makes laminate a good fit for dry rooms such as bedrooms, home offices and upper-floor living areas, and a poor fit for bathrooms, laundry rooms and any ground-floor room that could flood.
Water-resistant laminate grades tolerate spills better than standard laminate, but they are not a flood-resistant material and are not a substitute for tile in a wet area.
The installer confirms square footage and checks the slab or subfloor is flat and dry.
Carpet or old flooring is taken out and the base is cleaned.
A vapor-barrier underlayment goes down over concrete, per the manufacturer's instructions.
Planks float across the room with expansion gaps at the walls.
Baseboards and transition strips finish the edges and doorways.

Laminate installation costs about $4 to $17 per square foot installed, depending on grade, according to Modernize (August 12, 2026). Labor runs $2 to $6 per square foot, lower than most floors because click-lock laminate installs quickly without adhesive or grout.
| Grade | Thickness | Material (per sq ft) | Labor (per sq ft) | Installed (per sq ft) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Basic | 6–7mm | $2–$3 | $2–$4 | $4–$7 |
| Midrange | 8–10mm | $3–$5 | $2–$5 | $5–$10 |
| High-end | 12mm or more | $5–$11 | $3–$6 | $8–$17 |
| Waterproof / water-resistant | 8–12mm | $3–$7 | $2–$5 | $5–$12 |

Laminate is usually the lowest-cost wood look, but LVP handles Florida humidity better for close to the same price in water-resistant grades. For any room that could see standing water, laminate is not recommended; see tile installation or LVP installation instead. Compare every material on the flooring services page.

Most laminate is not waterproof: its core is compressed wood fiber, which can swell if it stays wet. Some "water-resistant" grades tolerate spills better, but FEMA's Technical Bulletin 2 rates laminate flooring as unacceptable for flood damage resistance, so it is not recommended for bathrooms, laundry rooms or ground floors in flood zones.
Yes. Laminate floats over the slab, usually with a vapor barrier underlayment in between, since concrete can carry moisture upward even when it feels dry. Follow the manufacturer's underlayment and moisture-limit instructions for slab installs.
Laminate has a wood-fiber core with a printed image layer, while LVP has a vinyl core. LVP tolerates moisture and humidity better, which matters more in Florida; laminate's lower grades usually cost less, but higher water-resistant laminate grades can cost close to LVP.
Laminate typically lasts 15 to 25 years with normal use, depending on the thickness and wear layer. Higher-end 12mm-or-thicker grades resist dents and wear longer than basic 6-7mm laminate.
Almost always. An underlayment cushions the floor, reduces noise and, over a concrete slab, usually includes a vapor barrier to block moisture from reaching the laminate core. Some laminate planks come with underlayment pre-attached.
